The presence of William McCombs in the 1840 Census of the Escambia County census for the Florida Territory (Florida became the 27th state in the Union in 1845), makes our family one of the Florida Pioneer families and makes me a 6th generation native Floridian.
William McCombs moved to Florida from New York and had 2 sons and a daughter, and was a ship’s carpenter.
Elizabeth E. White appears on an 1860 census record (she would've been 8 years old) that lists her race as "Mulatto" which at that time meant a mix of white and other blood (either Negro or Indian).
